ILLUSTRATION - personal project

Since the first time I watched the show, Blue Eye Samurai, I was hooked on the storytelling and unique fight scenes (especially in episode 5) as well as the style of combining 2D and 3D animation. I went down a rabbit hole of watching interviews of creatives who worked on the show like Brian Kesinger and Toby Wilson. The second I heard Animation Director Jane Wu say, “we wanted the show to look like a moving painting” in one of these interviews, I knew I had to illustrate a scene from the show.

Illustration process

I created this illustration in ProCreate. I first started by sketching the character and then moving to the background and adding color. I wanted to make sure the background was as complete as possible so that the reflections of the sun on the character would be as accurate as possible. I went through a few rounds of revisions for the color on the character to add more depth.
